Turquoise Landsknecht-ish - making a striped skirt (day 1)
I've taken a break from the grey wool kirtle (and most sewing) for other interests.
However, with an end of summer event coming up, I need something fancy to wear for court. This little outfit has been planned for a while. It's a lower stakes, fun outfit made from light linen. So I'm not going to be slashing the guards.
Here's an idea of the colors:
I drafted the bodice yesterday but of course I'm unhappy with the fit. So rather than fight with the fit on my day off I decided to do the skirt panels.
This time I went the easy route and took two panels 60 inches wide (fabric width). Then I cut some guards/stripes - one bigger with two smaller stripes on either side. I pulled threads to make sure the grain was straight.
And there's the idea. And of course, the cat.
The size difference didn't show up as much as I'd have liked. The ones for the outside are roughly 2 1/2 in and the middle is roughly 3 1/2 in. And it looks like an Ikea sign. Sooooo let's change it! I folded one of the strips in half again, and laid them out like this:
Mr. said now it looks like command stripes from Star Trek so I'm happier with it. It looks a little better in person.
The skirt panel is much much longer than I will end up with, so the placement should have the stripes closer to the hemline. Since the linen is so light, I'm hoping more fabric at the bottom will give a bit of weight or drape or structure, not entirely sure of the word I mean but ultimately will make it look better.
I took a shortcut and stitched the insides of the stripes with the machine and will handsew the other seam from the back (invisible). Here I folded it so both sides show.
So panel 1 mostly done. Today was hot and I got tired of sweating into the linen so I will put the proverbial pin in it for the rest of the day. I hope to finish the skirt tomorrow so I can see how it comes out! I'm a bit nervous about the stripes lining up. To be continued...
YIS,
